Introducing French to public schools

Ambassador of France to Ethiopia Brigitte Collet, along with Stse minister of education Faud Ibrahim, presented certificates to 20, 11th grade students who participated in a trial French language course given at Minellik II Secondary and Primary School.

It is an experiment with the hopes of eventually introducing French to other public schools. The French Embassy is supporting the program by providing skilled staff.

The French cources are voluntary and they will not be graded like the other mandatory subjects in the regular curriculum. The school says they are happy with the program and plan to continue it next year at Minellik II and with the support of the regional office of education, it will expand to two Addis Schools and three in Dire dawa, harrar and debre birhan. The extention will be supported by a small team of three Ethiopians and two French teachers.
